The 200-mile reef, which runs along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán, is a parallel world to the rainforest and has many similarities. The tree-like structures of the coral, like the jungle canopy, use photosynthesis to produce food and oxygen. The coral in turn provides shelter to many species and food to some, and it supports the food chain for the entire reef population – from sharks to plankton.
